Once again Brett Favre has found himself back in the discussion of a comeback to the National Football League. Why? How? Any particular reason? No. However, Jay Glazer, a NFL beat writer for FOXSPORTS.com and who also appears on the network’s FOX NFL Sunday program as their “insider” spent two days in Mankato, MN on location with the team at the Minnesota Vikings training camp on his “Glaze Across America” training camp tour. Wow , just the sound of that makes this very credible. Upon his return, Jay Glazer decided to write and post a blog entitled, “The Vibe at Vikings Camp: Favre Could Comeback.” The blog post can be read at the following link: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9922912/The-vibe-at-Vikings-camp:-Favre-could-come-back.
Really? I mean you really need to click the link above and read his blog. That is what this whole mess is all about. It is sad really. No substance, facts, leads, reliable sources. Nothing. Is there nothing else to write about after spending two days at Viking’s Camp. I know and understand that this is the first topic that would come to mind but c’mon, really? Of course all the other media outlets pick up on this post because after spending an entire two days at Viking’s Camp, Jay Glazer likes to think that he knows and has all the “inside” information in regards to the Minnesota Viking’s player personnel decisions. Heck, I am surprised after the 48 hours he was there and three practices later that the Viking’s did not hire him. Jay Glazer apparently spoke with “several unnamed” Viking’s players who still believe that Favre will play quarterback for the Minnesota Viking’s this season and one “unnamed” player in particular who believes the deal is done and forecasts Favre to be in Minnesota by the third preseason game. I understand that Jay Glazer is entitled to write and post whatever he wants under his own blog, but he has to understand that as the high profiled position he is in, there is always room for misinterpretation. He is a sportswriter and reporter. It is his job to speculate and ask hypothetical questions. He can write and speculate on whatever he wants. But, can we just stop beating the dead horse already?
Also, this makes me so upset because it is unfair to Brett Favre. As soon as all the other sports media outlets pick up on this blog post and report it, there is an immediate reaction from football fans around the country. “Are you serious, Brett Favre again?” “Why can’t he just go away!” “I am so sick of this story!” “Make a decision already!” These are the exact statements and questions people ask themselves whenever they hear this story come up again. I understand that for the past few years Brett Favre has had trouble making a decision whether to continue playing football or to retire. All the greats have. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Dan Marino all had trouble hanging it up in their respectable sports. It is always tough to give up something that you love. I do not fault Brett Favre at all for waffling back and forth on retirement. After what he has accomplished and done for the NFL he deserves the right. There are also people who believe that Brett Favre is tarnishing his image and legacy. Brett Favre has nothing to do with this blog post. He can not control what Jay Glazer writes about or for that matter what all the other sports media networks write stories and report about. It’s a business. They need to fill time and attract readers and viewers. It is obvious they have done this at the expense of Favre over the past few years. He has made his decision. He called Minnesota Viking’s Head Coach, Brad Childress nearly three weeks ago and told him he made his decision not to return to the NFL and play quarterback for the Viking’s after telling them once before a week earlier.
So, Jay Glazer give it a rest already will you? Go back to Pros vs. Joes and talk all you want, keep your mouth shut or do not open it until you have something of substance or factual information to report. Not just a “gut feeling” or “instinct” because most of the time there wrong. Overall, you could argue that this “crap” is only helping the Packers. Without a doubt this is becoming an ongoing distraction and shadow that seems to be cast over the Viking’s simply because the media will not let it die. It may not be affecting the entire team, but I know it has to be on the back of the minds of Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels because neither of them will ever be the quarterback that Brett Favre was. Bottom line, the one thing that people never seem to grasp is there is a big difference between perception and reality. As much as I want to see Brett Favre play 4ever, ultimately, the only reality is Brett Favre is retired and will do so a Green Bay Packer.
