If I had a vote for the 2009 Heisman Memorial Trophy Award, my vote would go to............................Senior RB Toby Gerhart of the Stanford Cardinal. RB Toby Gerhart led the Cardinal to an 8-4 record and bowl berth. During the 2009 regular season, RB Toby Gerhart rushed for 1,736 yards & 26 TD on 311 carries, leading the nation in all three categories. That is averaging is over 5.5 yards per carry. In the twelve games played he rushed for 100+ yards in 10 of those games and over 200+ yards in 2 of those games. In nine of those games he had multiple touchdowns. It is not often that you see a player capable of simply taking over a football game. Anytime you can hand the ball off between 25-40 times a game to your RB, you are in good shape to win the game because you are not only controlling the tempo of the game but you are also wearing down the opposing defense as well. You also have to keep in mind that going into every game, opposing defenses knew exactly what Stanford's gameplan was going to be on offense: Give the rock to RB Toby Gerhart and they still could not prevent him from putting up these numbers. RB Toby Gerhart does not run around people, he simply runs over or through them. Just watching him run the ball the way he does with soo much effort is exhausting in itself. RB Toby Gerhart was selected First Team All-American by the AFCA(Media has yet to be released) and will more than likely be selected as Player of the year in the PAC-10 Conference.
There is no doubt that RB Toby Gerhart is a dark horse to win the Heisman as QB Tim Tebow(Florida) & Colt McCoy(Texas) are the frontrunners for the award. However, the Heisman Trophy by definition is to be awarded to the most outstanding player in college football. He led the nation in rushing attempts and yards and scored more touchdowns that any other offensive player in the game. What more can you ask for? RB Toby Gerhart may not be on the best team as the other candidates, but he has been nothing short of outstanding. Without RB Toby Gerhart Stanford probably does not even finish with a winning record in the deep PAC-10 Conference. He also is a longshot because he plays on the West Coast(exception: USC) and does not get as much media attention or hype as other the candidiates. Tebow and McCoy will also have played one more game that he has as they both play in their respective conference championship games, so that also give them an advantage. Heck, the craziest thing about RB Toby Gerhart is that he is white. Now, that is not a racist comment at all. I am far from racist. Let's be honest, how many other white NCAA Div-1A RBs can you think of that run the ball like this kid? He also wears the #7 at Stanford. You would think that you probably have to be pretty good in order for the coaches to let you wear #7 at Stanford(John Elway). Needless to say, RB Toby Gerhart is one heck of a football player. It would only be fitting that 10 years after another strong, bruising, powerful RB won the 1999 Heisman Trophy(Ron Dayne), that a player like RB Toby Gerhart who reminds people of him could possibly walk away with the honor. I understand and know that he may not be the sexy or flashy pick that the media wants, but at least I hope he gets invited to the New York Athletic Club and his performance and efforts this season are recognized as a finalist for the 2009 Heisman Memorial Trophy Award.
